Philadelphia, PA- Saint Mary's junior midfielder Anthony Butler scored in the first thirty seconds of play and freshman Michael Clegg added two goals in a 3-0 rout over Philadelphia. Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Mason tallied his third shutout of the season as SMC improves to 3-2-1 overall and Philadelphia University drops to 2-4-0 on the year.
Just after the opening whistle, the Gaels wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Butler drilled the ball past Rams goalkeeper Mike Wallover 30-seconds into the game on an assist by Matthew Fitzgerald.
The newcomer Clegg continued his torrid goal scoring pace adding his first goal of the game at the 19-minute mark. The goal was assisted by the combination of Fitzgerald and senior Daniel Smith.
Clegg capped off the scoring at the 68-minute mark with his sixth goal of the season. The goal was set up by senior Michael Johnson and freshman Carlos Diaz. The two goals mark the second time this season the newcomer has tallied a multi-goal game.
In net, Mason was superb, recording his eighth shutout of his career and third of the season. Mason also tallied a game-high seven saves en-route to his third victory of the season.
The Gaels and the Rams each fired off 12 shots with SMC pouring in seven in the first half. Clegg led the Gaels with five shots, putting three on goal.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Sunday, September 25 when the Gaels head east once again this time to face Bowling Green. The last non-conference game is scheduled to begin at Noon.
