Bowling Green, OH- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 defeat to Bowling Green Sunday afternoon from Mickey Cochrane Stadium. The Falcons, who defeated No. 11-ranked Ohio State two days earlier, scored three second half goals to earn the victory. After the loss, the Gaels conclude non-conference play with a 3-3-1 overall record, while the Falcons improve to 2-5-1 on the year.
After a scoreless first half, Bowling Green got on the board at the 66-minute mark, when Omari Aldridge found the net on an assist by John MacKenzie.
Aldridge would tally his second goal of the match four minutes later, when he buried a penalty kick past SMC goalkeeper Brian Mason.
The Gaels got on the scoreboard one minute later in the 71st minute when true freshman Guillermo Trujillo tallied his first collegiate goal. Junior Matthew Fitzgerald handed out the assist, his fourth of the season.
The Falcons would add on an insurance goal with five minutes to play when Gregory Hennelley scored his first goal of the season to hand BGSU a 3-1 advantage.
Saint Mary's bombarded Bowling Green with 21 shots but were unable to capitalize. Trujillo and Fitzgerald led the way with four shots a piece. The Falcons got off 18 shots and were led by Hennelley and Aldridge, who also recorded four shots a piece.
In goal, Paul Shoemaker earned the victory for BGSU after recording a game-high nine saves. Mason recorded four saves on the afternoon for SMC.
Now with the conclusion of non-conference action, Saint Mary's will return home to play on Friday, September 30 against Bay Area rival San Francisco. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. from Saint Mary's Stadium.
