Moraga, CA- Saint Mary's men's soccer freshman forward Michael Clegg (Santa Clarita, CA) was rewarded for his outstanding play both on the national and local scene. Nationally Clegg was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week and locally was named WCC Co-Player of the Week.
The newcomer tallied four goals in his first two games played at the collegiate level. Clegg had no problems adjusting to the speed of collegiate soccer as he recorded a hat-trick in the first 35-minutes to lead the Gaels to a 3-0 victory over Sacramento State on September 1. Two days later the freshman once again led the Gaels as he tallied his fourth goal on the season by tallying the lone goal in the Gaels' 1-0 victory over Oregon State.
Against the Hornets, Clegg notched his first goal and first game-winner of the season when he scored 15 minutes into the contest on a one-one with the keeper. Less than 10 minutes later Clegg drilled a penalty shot into the back of the net to give SMC a 2-0 advantage. At the 35-minute mark Clegg capped off his hat-trick when he followed up a shot the caromed off the goalkeeper.
Clegg tallied his second game-winner in as many games when he scored on a free-kick from 19-yards out to help land a 1-0 victory over Oregon State on September 3.
Clegg's performance last week helped SMC record a 2-0 mark to start the season for the first time since 1991 and for just the second time in school history.
Clegg is the first Gael to nab WCC Player of the Week honors since Derek Youpel earned the recognition last September.
