Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss of the Season

San Jose, CA- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season dropping a 2-1 decision to San Jose State Wednesday night from Spartan Stadium. Junior Alex Christlieb tallied the lone goal for the Gaels. After the loss, SMC falls to 2-1 on the season while SJSU improves to 1-0-1 on the year.
San Jose State's Nelson Diaz broke the scoreless tie at the 39-minute mark on a through-ball assist by Guilherme Fadlalla. The Spartans opened the second half with an immediate goal. In the 47th minute Ismael Ibarra scored off of a throw-in from Marvin Sorto.
Christlieb got the Gaels on the board in the 73rd minute when he nailed a header into the back of the net off a flick from senior Michael Johnson. For Christlieb, the goal marks his second of his career and his first of the season.
Saint Mary's sophomore goalkeeper Brian Mason saw his two-game scoreless streak snapped but kept the Gaels in the game with some tremendous saves in the first half. Mason tallied seven saves on the night. Spartan goalkeeper Richard Mann recorded his first collegiate victory after tallying three saves.
The Gaels were out-shot 25-13 on the night but were knocking on the Spartans door although the second half with eight shots. Anthony Butler, Matthew Walker and Matthew Fitzgerald led the Gaels with two shots a piece.
Saint Mary's will return home for its next match on Sunday, September 11 and face the University of Washington Huskies. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. from Saint Mary's Stadium.
