Portland, OR – The Saint Mary's men's soccer team was enjoying its longest unbeaten streak since 2001 going into Sunday's game against the Portland Pilots, but after two early goals by the Pilots the Gaels would not see that streak extended, as the Gaels (3-7-3/2-2-2 WCC) fell to Portland (5-7-2/2-4-0 WCC) by a final score of 3-0 at Merlo Field.
Portland did not resemble the team that came into the game having lost five of their last six games, including their last three. The Pilots jumped out to an early lead when Collen Warner scored his first goal of the season in the 13th minute when his shot from the top of the box found its way to the back of the net. Steven Hosseinmardi and Bryan Irwin were credited for the assist.
The Pilots kept on the pressure when the Pilots' Frankie Lopez tallied his eighth goal of the season six minutes later, when his shot from the left wing got past Gaels' keeper Jason Badger.
The Gaels had their chances, as they outshot the Pilots by an advantage of 13 to 10, and of those 13 six were on goal. But Portland's keeper Austin Guerrero was up the task recording seven saves on the afternoon, recording his second shut out of the season.
When Guerrero was not making saves, the Gaels were beating themselves, missing opportunities to get on the board. In the 33rd minute Erik Rivas had a shot from the top of the box go over the cross bar. Malcolm Alugas followed suit, missing high from the top of the box in the 35th minute.
On the day the Gaels had two shots on goal from Scott Eberhardt, two shots from Erik Rivas, two shots and a shot on goal from Yousef Samy. Tom Mohoric, Justin Grider and Mark Araujo each had a shot, and Dominic Smith, Emmanuel Sarabia, and Jason Coelho rounded out the offensive output on the afternoon.
The Pilots' Lopez put the game on ice when he scored his second goal of the game, and ninth of the season in the 68th minute. Collen Warner was credited for the assist.
Badger recorded five saves for Saint Mary's in the losing effort. For the season he has recorded 44 saves, his goal against average rises to 1.42, and his record is now 3-6-3.
Saint Mary's has the week off, and will return to the playing field on October 31st when they head down south to take on the Lions of Loyola Marymount at 3:00 PM at Sullivan Field.
