Sophomore Claire Soper compiled a perfect 4-0 record last weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kickoff. The event was hosted by Southern California in Los Angeles, with the Gaels posting a 1-1 record.
Soper was the only Saint Mary's player to win all of her matches in both doubles and singles, helping the Gaels to their first win of the 2009 season. In Saint Mary's tough loss to No. 29 Texas A&M, Soper paired up with Alex Poorta to earn a 9-7 victory at the one spot. Soper then went on to post an impressive win on court three, defeating the Aggies' Lauren Santacroce in a three-set battle, 6-7(9), 6-2, 6-4.
The next day Soper led the Gaels to their first win of the season, as the team topped Michigan State, 4-2. Although Saint Mary's dropped the doubles points, Soper and Poorta defeated their opponent at the one position quite easily, 8-2. In singles action Soper continued right where she left off, tabbing a 6-3, 6-0 singles win at the No. 3 position.
The Gaels' two matches in the ITA Kickoff mark their only competitions of the season thus far, with Soper posting a perfect 2-0 record in singles and doubles.
