The Saint Mary's men's soccer team (2-1-1) returns to the field this week with two more non-conference matches. The Gaels travel to San Jose State (4-1-0) on Thursday, September 16 to take on the Spartans at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, the Gaels return to Saint Mary's Stadium to host Cal State Bakersfield (3-0-0) at 2:00 p.m.

NSCAA/Adidas National Rankings
Saint Mary's College is receiving votes in the NSCAA/Adidas national poll for the second consecutive week. Cal State Bakersfield is also receiving votes while San Jose State is unranked. From the West Coast Conference, Portland is ranked at No. 15.
Who's Hot
At the Cal Legacy Classic, the Gaels opened the tournament with an overtime victory over No. 19 California. Sophomore Trevor Newquist provided the game-winning goal. In the 103rd minute, Newquist scored on a header off a corner kick by redshirt junior Joel Fumia.
Newquist was named to the Cal Legacy Classic all-tournament team along with goalkeeper Doug Herrick.
Scouting the San Jose State Spartans
The Spartans enter the week with a 4-1 mark with victories over UC Riverside, Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge. SJSU's only loss came at UC Davis by a 1-0 score.
Josh Boemecke leads San Jose State with five goals this season. Of his 13 shots, 10 have been on goal while three of his goals have been game-winning goals.
Ricky Martin has scored twice for SJSU and has added one assist.
Jonathan Lester has seen the most action at goalkeeper. Lester has allowed four goals in 367:50 minutes resulting in a 0.98 GAA.
SJSU and SMC have faced one common opponent in 2010. On September 10, the Spartans defeated the Titans by a 1-0 score as Boemecke connected on the only goal of the match in the 25th minute.
All-Time Series Record vs. San Jose State
San Jose State has won 16 of the 25 meetings between the two schools. Saint Mary's won the last meeting in 2007 by a 2-1 score.
Scouting the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners
The Roadrunners will face UC Riverside on Thursday, before making the trip to Saint Mary's Stadium on Sunday. CSUB has wins over No. 8 UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis and the University of San Francisco.
Cal State Bakersfield is led by Jesus Sanchez with two goals this season while Gyasi Zardes, Ernesto Hinojosa and Keeyan Ghazanfarpour have also scored. In goal, Eric Shannon has allowed one goal in 276:45 minutes and sports a 0.33 GAA.
All-Time Series Record vs. Cal State Bakersfield
Sunday's match will represent just the third-ever meeting between the two schools. SMC is 0-1-1 against CSUB, with the 2009 meeting resulting in a 1-1 tie.
Looking Back At Last Week
Saint Mary's upset No. 19 California in a 2-1 2OT victory at the Cal Legacy Classic. The Gaels returned to the field at UC Davis but dropped a 2-1 decision to the Aggies, despite holding a 1-0 edge at halftime.
Gaels Return Six All-WCC Players
Saint Mary's had eight players garner All-West Coast Conference honors in 2009, and six of those eight return this season. Defender Jordan Grider returns for his senior season after being named the 2009 WCC Defensive Player of the Year as well as receiving All-WCC First Team accolades. Senior midfielder Dylan Leslie was also named to the All-WCC First Team, after posting a career-high 15 points on three goals and nine assists, for the second time in his career. Sophomore midfielder Trevor Newquist returns for his sophomore season after being named to the WCC All-Freshman Team and the All-WCC Honorable Mention Team. Newquist led the team in goals scored (4) and was second on the team in points with 10. Sophomore Jose Cabeza also joined Newquist on the All-Freshman Team, while forward Malcolm Alugas and goalkeeper Doug Herrick were named to the All-WCC Honorable Mention Team.
Head Coach Adam Cooper
Adam Cooper enters his fifth year as the head coach of the Gaels, after a record-breaking 2009 campaign in which the Gaels made their first program appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Saint Mary's posted their first ever 10-win season and finished second in the WCC standings. Cooper had eight players earn All-West Coast conference honors and he was named the WCC Coach of the Year. Cooper was also named to the NSCAA/Mondo West Region Coach of the Year following the 2009 season.
Saint Mary's Welcomes 15 Newcomers to 2010 Squad
After losing six seniors to graduation, Adam Cooper brings 15 new faces to the field for the 2010 campaign. Included in the 15 newcomers are two transfers in midfielder Agustin Cazarez and goalkeeper Braden Hoyt. The 13 freshmen include two goalkeepers André Rawls and Cory Thomas; defenders Michael Jachetta, Michael King, and Hammie Sessions; midfielders Ismail Adam, Duncan Capriotti, Colin Gurley, Nick Marshall, and Brandon Saunders; and forwards Austin Bravo, Justin Howard, and Peter Nguyen.
Next Week
Saint Mary's will have a single match next week on Friday, September 24 when it travels to Stanford. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. against the Cardinal. The match represents the final tune-up before the WCC slate opens up at home against San Diego on October 1.
