BERKELEY, Calif. -- Matched up against perhaps one of the toughest opponents it will face all season, the Saint Mary's women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to host Cal in the final of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Berkeley.
Saint Mary's (1-1) earned a hard-fought 5-2 win over UNLV on Sunday to make it to Monday's championship match. There, the Gaels found a Bears team ranked No. 7 in the country.
Doubles action finished quickly, with Cal winning two matches and the third ending once the Bears clinched the point.
In singles, Cal won each of the six matches in straight sets. SMC's No. 1 singles player, Jenny Jullien, pushed the second set of her match against Zsofi Susanyi to a tiebreaker, but Susanyi eventually took a 7-4 win to claim the match.
The No. 41-ranked Gaels return to the court on Saturday when they take on No. 47 Washington in San Diego. SMC will face San Diego State on Sunday before opening conference play next Wednesday at Portland.
Fans can get their first look at the Gaels on their home court when they face Cal Poly on Feb. 10 at 11 a.m.No. 7 Cal 7, No. 42 Saint Mary's 0
