SAN BRUNO, Calif. - A program-high six members of the Saint Mary's men's soccer team earned West Coast Conference Men's Soccer All-Academic Team honors, including first-team selections Carlo Eikani and Michael Semenza.
In addition to Eikani and Semenza, senior Cory Schmidt and juniors Lukas Isaacson, Forrest Solis and Jake Stenberg earned honorable mention honors.
The six Gaels represented on the honor team is the most-ever in a single season for a Saint Mary's team, dating back to the first year of the award's existence in 2004. SMC had five student-athletes represented in 2011 and four last year. Solis and Stenberg are repeat honorees from last season.
Senior Bobby Conner, a first-team honoree last season with a 3.54 cumulative grade point average in business administraion, was not considered since he only played 40 total minutes this season due to injury. He is expected to return to the team next season as a fifth year senior.
EIkani, a junior from nearby Alamo, owns a 3.448 grade point average in biochemistry. He is tied for the team lead in goals scored this season with four and shares runner-up honors in total points with eight.
Semenza, a senior from Encinitas, is a business administration major with a 3.237 cumulative grade point average. He shares the team lead in goals with Eikani and has compiled a team-high 13 total points.
Saint Mary's has won equaled a program record with 11 wins this season, which sets a program high for total wins during the regular season. The Gaels are 11-5-2 overall, have won four of their last five matches and are tied for second place in the WCC with a 4-2-0 record.
The team plays its final match of the regular season tomorrow with a 7 p.m. kickoff at the University of the Pacific. A victory over the Tigers clinches no worse than a share of runner-up honors in the WCC, behind league champion San Diego.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to her team.
