GOLF | Farnam leads Gaels at Alister Mackenzie

The sophomore Farnam led Saint Mary's with a solid 5-under score in the opening two rounds at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational.

FAIRFAX, Calif. — With a strong second round on Monday, Saint Mary's remains within reach of a top-3 finish heading into the final day of the Alister Mackenzie Invitational.

THE LEADERBOARD
The Gaels currently sit in seventh place at 12-under in the 15-team field and are just behind San Francisco and UC Davis by one stroke for fifth place. Cal leads all teams with a 36-under score and is trailed by Pepperdine (30-under) and San Jose State (21-under).

Leading Saint Mary's is Ethan Farnam who is tied for 13th in the 80-competitor field. Farnam's 5-under total is only one stroke behind tying for eighth and three strokes back of tying for fifth. Michael Slesinski is second on the Gaels at 3-under while Ryan Grauman trails just behind at 1-under.

The Golden Bears boast three players in the top-6 of the individual leaderboard including current leader Collin Morikawa at 13-under and runner-up Sebastian Crampton at 12-under. Ryan McCarty of Santa Clara (11-under), RJ Manke of Pepperdine (11-under), Kaiwen Liu of Cal (8-under), and Ryan Han of UC Davis (8-under) round out the top-6.

FIRST ROUND HIGHLIGHTS

Farnam led the Gaels with a 3-under opening round and had five birdies.
Grauman had back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes.
Slesinski also had back-to-back birdies on 12th and 13th and had five total birdies in the first round.
Four Gaels birdied the 1st hole.

SECOND ROUND HIGHLIGHTS

Ethan Ashbrook jumped 23 spots in the standings with a 4-under middle round.
Ashbrook had six birdies on the back nine including four straight from 15th to 18th.
Slesinski also shot 4-under in the second round and had four birdies on the back nine.
Grauman tied Ashbrook for the team-lead in birdies with seven.
