Saint Mary's will host Oregon State on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
MORAGA, Calif. — No. 4 Saint Mary's will begin their NCAA Tournament run this Sunday as they host No. 24 Oregon State at 1 p.m. Given the situation of the Camp Fire and unhealthy air conditions, the location of the match is pending. Further information will be released in the coming hours.
Links to live stats and the stream can be found on the Gaels' schedule page.
Saint Mary's will make their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 10 years after posting a sterling 17-0-1, 6-0-1 WCC record to not only win their conference but also receive a first round bye in the postseason. SMC will look to replicate their unprecedented run from 2011 when they advanced to the Elite 8.
The Gaels statistically ranked as one of the top teams in the nation on both sides of the ball during the regular season. No Division I team scored more goals than Saint Mary's, who averaged 2.72 per contest, and only North Carolina allowed as few goals as the Gaels at .430 per match. SMC shutout their opposition 13 times in 18 games, the best of any team in the nation as well.
Junior forward Jake Rudel earned his second First Team All-WCC honor this week after leading the conference in goals and points. Rudel ranks 10th in the nation in both categories as well and his 13 goals are second all-time in a single season by a Gael.
Four other Gaels were named First Team All-WCC including Stephen Dougherty, Anders Engebretsen, Remi Prieur and Jakub Svehlik. Filippo Zattarin also made Second Team while Joseph Restani was named an Honorable Mention.
In the team's last time out, Saint Mary's defeated No. 15 Portland on the road 1-0 to finish the regular season undefeated. Dougherty scored his sixth goal of the season on a free kick to win the game for the Gaels while Remi Prieur notched his 12th clean sheet of the year.
ABOUT OREGON STATE
The Beavers advanced to the second round of the tournament after defeating Southern Methodist last night in Corvallis with a 2-1 decision. Oregon State finished second in their conference behind three-time defending national champion Stanford and had an 11-5-3, 6-3-1 PAC-12 record.
OSU has outscored their opponents 29-22 this year and have recorded five clean sheets as a team.
The Beavers' offense has had three key players producing most of the points this year in Don Tchilao, Gloire Amanda, and Sofiane Djeffal. Tchilao leads the team in assists (9) and points (23) while Amanda is the club's top goal scorer with eight tallies this season. Djeffal has recorded 17 points as well and is second on the roster with seven helpers.
The Gaels and Beavers have met six times in the past and are an even 3-3 head-to-head. The two teams have not met since 2005 however, a year before Cooper's tenure began, in a match that Saint Mary's won 1-0 in Moraga.
