MORAGA, Calif. — The Gaels and the Pilots took it to the final moments in Saturday's and both scored with under three minutes to go, but neither team could net another goal in overtime as the match ended 1-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pilots appeared to seal the match in the 88th minute with a goal from the top of the box that went just past Maleah Milner's reach and sailed into the back left corner of the goal. However in the 90th minute, sophomore Kaytlin Brinkman sent a corner into the box and sophomore Paris Fox was able to head the goal into the net to tie the game 1-1 with less than 20 seconds to go. Both overtime periods were suspenseful but ultimately did not affect the overall outcome of the game and the Gaels and the Pilots ended in a tie.
The first half of play was largely defensive between the Gaels and the Pilots as neither team had more than two shots on goal in the first period. The Pilots had their first close scoring attempt of the match in the sixth minute following a set piece outside the box, but the ball hit the top crossbar and sailed out of bounds. The Gaels had their first shot on goal shortly after Portland in the 12th minute of play from freshman
Nayeli Diaz, but the shot was stopped by the goalie as it headed for the center of the net. Junior
Maleah Milner recorded two saves in half, including one in the 29th minute that she blocked as the Pilot forward sent it towards the bottom right of the goal.
Milner made her first save of the second half within the first minute of play as a Portland player sent a cross towards the goal, but Milner was able to block the shot and keep the Pilots scoreless. A header from a Pilots forward in the 75th minute almost put Portland ahead, but it was off target and went high of the goal. The Gaels had a close opportunity of their own in the 74th minute of play after a corner kick gave senior Jessica Ko a chance to take the shot, but it was caught by the Pilots goalie. Senior Kailana Kaeo had another attempt shortly after in the 77th minute on a set piece, but the Pilots goalie was again able to defend it. Senior Jaylen Crim had a shot of her own in the 83rd minute, but it went just wide of the left post.
