WSOC | Gaels Face Off Against No. 5 BYU This Week

Saint Mary's will travel to Utah on Friday to take on the No. 5 Cougars at 6 p.m.
MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (6-6-1, 0-2-1 WCC) will travel to Utah this weekend to face off against BYU on Friday for a 6 p.m. matchup.
The Gaels are coming off a rough loss to San Diego last week, but bounced back on Saturday as they rallied late to earn a 1-1 tie in double overtime against Portland. SMC forced the contest to go into overtime as they scored in the final 15 seconds courtesy of a header from Paris Fox to tie the game. Neither team would go on to score in two overtime periods. Saint Mary's recorded five corner kicks in the game and tallied 11 shots, with six coming on frame.
As a team, the Gaels have outshot their opposition 202-163 so far this year while averaging 15.5 shots per game compared to their opponents with 12.5 per game. As they head into Friday's contest against the Cougars, Saint Mary's will look to earn their first conference match of the season.

No. 5 BYU has had an impressive season so far as they own a perfect 12-0-1 overall record and are 2-0-1 in the conference. The Cougars have recorded 10 total shutouts, including a 6-0 victory over Pacific last week. BYU has tallied 42 goals this year but has given up five goals in their last four matches.
Elise Flake leads the Cougars' offense and the conference in goals (11) and points (24) while Mikayla Colohan has tallied 56 shots to lead the team which is good for second in the conference. In net, Sabrina Davis ranks first in the conference with a .800 save percentage while recording 24 saves so far this year. Davis has recorded three of the Cougars' 10 shutouts.
BYU leads the Cougars-Gaels rivalry at 8-0-1 and defeated SMC in their last matchup in 2018 as they recorded a 3-1 win over the Gaels.
