OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — No. 9 Saint Mary's senior forward Anders Engebretsen was named one of 10 finalists for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award earlier this week for his terrific contributions on and off the field.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
The finalists were chosen by a selection committee from the list of 30 men's candidates and 30 women's candidates announced in September. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through November 18, 2019. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2019 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup championships later this fall.
Engebretsen has been one of the country's best offensive players this season as he currently ranks second in the nation in points per game and first in the West Coast Conference. The Oslo, Norway native has tallied 10 goals and seven points this season and leads the team in shots.
Off the field, Engebretsen has been a star in the classroom and was named not only to the WCC's All-Academic Team but also to the Commissioner's Honor Roll with Gold Honors, the highest possible recognition. The senior is studying economics and owns a stellar 3.76 GPA. He has also spent time in the Dominican Republic helping orphaned children learn the game of soccer.
