WSOC | Gaels Fall 4-0 to USF

Saint Mary's put up a hard fight against San Francisco on Saturday but ultimately fell in a 4-0 decision.

MORAGA, Calif. Saint Mary's (6-5, 0-1 WCC) steady first half was not enough to overcome San Francisco on Saturday afternoon as they fell to the Dons in a 4-0 decision in their  first home loss of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's had a strong defensive performance throughout the first half of the contest as they gave up only six shots while recording four of their own. Each team was forced to make one save during the half.

San Francisco took the lead within the first minute of the second half off a goal from Samantha Jehnings which was followed by another tally two minutes later from Miciah Madison. USF would then add two more to the board courtesy of Keely Roy who scored from 35-yards out in the 50th minute then scored her second just two minutes later.

SMC added eight shots in the second half as they outshot the Dons 12-11 with half of those coming on frame. Kaytlin Brinkman, Jaylen Crim, and Maya Alcantara led the offense as they each collected two a piece. Alcantara found the back of the net in the final seconds of the game but not before the final horn sounded.

THOUGHTS FROM TRAVIS CLARKE
  • "We are disappointed in today's result. We outshot them, had the ball as much as them, but we checked out for seven minutes and you get punished for that in this conference."
  • "The match was not characterstic of us this year and I am positive that this group will train well this week and respond in our next game."

UP NEXT: SAN DIEGO
  • Saint Mary's will travel to southern California on Wednesday for a mid-week matchup against the Toreros at 7 p.m. Links to the game can be found on the schedule page.
