WSOC | Gaels Travel to San Diego, Host Portland This Week

Saint Mary's will hit the road on Wednesday for a mid-week matchup against the Toreros before hosting the Pilots on Saturday.

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (6-5, 0-1 WCC) will travel to southern California on Wednesday for a mid-week matchup against San Diego before returning home to host Portland on Saturday. Wednesday's contest will begin at 7 p.m. while Saturday's match will have a 3 p.m. kickoff.

The Gaels are looking to earn their first conference win and bounce back from their first loss at home this season as they are coming off a 4-0 loss to San Francisco. Despite SMC's strong defensive performance throughout the first half of the match, the Gaels were ultimately overcome by the Dons following their four-goal shutout.

Jaylen Crim has led the Gaels' efforts so far this season as she currently leads the team in goals (5), shots (27), and points (13). The senior ranks sixth in the West Coast Conference in points and seventh in goals. Crim and Jordyn Cunningham are tied for first in leading the team in assists with three. 

ABOUT SAN DIEGO
San Diego currently owns a 4-5-1 overall record and are 0-1 in the conference. The Toreros began WCC play last week with a 6-0 loss to Gonzaga for their first conference loss of the season. 

Toreros' Milan Moses has scored four of San Diego's goals so far this year. Moses leads the team with eight points and has tallied 34 shots, which is good for fourth in the conference. In goal, Amber Michel has collected 37 saves and has recorded two shutouts so far this year.

San Diego holds a 17-10 all-time record against the Gaels dating back to 1992 with the last meeting between the two teams coming in 2018 when the Toreros defeated SMC 1-0. 

ABOUT PORTLAND
Portland will head into Saturday's match with a 4-3-2 record and are also 0-1 in WCC action this year. Before facing off against Saint Mary's on Saturday, Portland will host Gonzaga on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Pilots most recently fell 1-0 to Pepperdine in their conference opener. 

The Pilots are led by Taryn Ries as she has notched three goals, four assists, 12 shots, and 10 points. MJ Roe and Kimberly Hazlett are close behind Ries in goals as they have each recorded two goals a piece. Jenny Wahlen has started in all nine games in goal for Portland and has tallied 36 saves and three shutouts. 

Portland leads the Pilots-Gaels rivalry at 25-5-1 and were victorious in their last matchup in 2018 against Saint Mary's as they recorded a 3-0 win over the Gaels.
