BASE | Gaels Fall in Series Opener After 9th-Inning Comeback

EUGENE, Ore. – In a back-and-forth series opener which saw the Gaels come from behind in the ninth to tie the game, the Oregon Ducks managed to walk off with a sacrifice fly to secure the first win of the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  •  Saint Mary's threatened in the second and third, sending runners to third base in both innings. However, it was not until the top of the fifth when the Gaels were able to break the scoreless tie: SMC got the rally going with two outs when junior Joe Vranesh singled to right field. Then, Kevin Milam sent a 3-2 double down the left-field line, allowing Vranesh to score all the way from first, giving the Gaels a 1-0 lead.

  • Meanwhile, junior left-hander Ken Waldichuk was lights-out through the first five innings of his second start of the season. It took until the sixth for the Ducks to make some noise: they managed to load the bases with no outs on a walk and a pair of hit by pitches. Senior lefty Ty Madrigal entered the game in relief and managed to limit the damage, sandwiching one hit between a strikeout and a 1-2-3 double play.

  • The Gaels went quietly until the ninth inning where they faced a 1-run deficit with three outs remaining. With one out, Saint Mary's remained patient, loading the bases on three walks before freshman Marc Goulart delivered a pinch-hit, RBI groundout to tie the game at two runs apiece.

  • In the bottom of the ninth, Oregon loaded the bases with no outs thanks to a pair of singles and an intentional walk. In response, Saint Mary's brought in an outfielder to put five fielders in the infield. However, after striking out the next batter, a sacrifice fly to right field gave the Ducks a 3-2, walkoff victory.

QUOTABLES

"Today was a good ball game with good pitching and defense," said head coach Eric Valenzuela. "However, we handed them their runs which you can't do against good teams. The boys will bounce back and get better from this game."

  • 1: SMC only allowed one extra base hit in Friday afternoon's contest
