
BASE | Multiple Gaels Heat Up Summer Leagues

MORAGA, Calif. – A number of Gaels have been competing in summer leagues throughout the nation this offseason, with standout performances by junior Gio Diaz, sophomore Dalton Ponce, and others.
GAELS TO WATCH
Gio Diaz – Bethesda Big Train
After a strong season with the Gaels where he played predominantly in the shortstop position, junior Gio Diaz continues to succeed with the Bethesda Big Train in the Cal Ripken Summer League. Diaz recorded a 0.318 batting average while collecting 41 hits, 27 RBI, seven doubles and one home run. He also amassed 39 stolen bases which is a new Cal Ripken League single-season record and was also named the MVP of the All-Star Game.
Dalton Ponce – Bethesda Big Train
Sophomore Dalton Ponce had a strong inaugural season with Saint Mary's before joining the Bethesda Big Train this offseason. Ponce pitched in and started six games with 30 innings pitched and one complete game. He posted a record of 5-1 with an ERA of 3.30 and he only gave up 11 earned runs. Ponce also only allowed two walks this summer.
Gabe Giosso – Brockton Rox
Following a season of clutch hitting for SMC, junior Gabe Giosso joined the Brockton Rox of the Futures Collegiate Summer League. He played in a total of 34 games for the Rox and has collected 34 hits with nine doubles and five homeruns. Giosso batted .268 with 23 RBI and 12 walks.
Matt Green – Palm Springs Power
Senior Matt Green played in 21 games with the Palm Springs Power in the Southern California Collegiate Summer League and posted a .366 batting average. He had a total of 26 hits and has recorded eight doubles as well as a homerun. Green also drove in 20 runs for the Power.
Michael Hobbs - Orleans Firebirds
Junior Michael Hobbs performed well in the prestigious, Cape Cod League this summer with the Firebirds. In five appearances, he tossed 6.2 innings, allowing no earned runs, eight hits, and one walk, while striking out three.
