Saint Mary's 31-match unbeaten streak was snapped on Thursday against UC Davis.
MORAGA, Calif. – No. 6 Saint Mary's put up a hard-fought battle on Thursday against UC Davis but ultimately fell 4-2 for their first loss since 2017.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels took the lead in the 20th minute on just their second shot of the match when Anders Engebretsen found a streaking Joseph Restani on the far right post for a tap in goal. The tally was Restani's second of the year and Engebretsen's fourth assist.
UC Davis tied the match just minutes into the second half as Whalen Shinn found a rebound in front of the net and scored from six yards out. Restani would put the Gaels back up less than four minutes later however with a rocket to the upper left corner for the unassisted goal.
In the 70th minute, Saint Mary's was called for a foul at the top of the box allowing for an Aggies' penalty kick attempt. Kristian Heptner placed an unblockable shot to the right corner for the second equalizer of the match. Andy Velasquez would go on to score UC Davis' third goal of the afternoon and just minutes later, Heptner notched the Aggies' fourth goal in the 80th minute.
The decision for the Gaels is their first loss at home since September 16, 2016 in a matchup against Air Force.
Thursday's match was the first time this season Saint Mary's has been outshot in a game. The Aggies took 15 attempts compared to 11 for the Gaels. Goalkeeper Remi Prieur finished the match with five saves.
