MORAGA, Calif. — Coming off of a stellar 2019 campaign, Gaels Baseball ace Carlos Lomeli has been ranked among the best pitchers in the nation according to D1 Baseball's Analytics: Top 150. This list was released earlier this week and slots Lomeli in as the 67th-best pitcher in the country, and second best in the West Coast Conference
D1 Baseball's Analytics: Top 150 Pitchers list was compiled using three main categories – Zone Control, Pitch Ability, and Durability – and was graded using a 0-100 scale. To view the entire set of rankings from D1 Baseball Analytics, click here (subscription required).
Lomeli finds himself with an overall score of 83.3, and he ranked highest in "Pitchability," which is a measure that refers to statistics that measure's a pitcher's ability to pitch, such as WHIP (walks+hits per inning pitched), FIP (fielding independent pitching) and opponent's slugging percentage. Lomeli is rated at 89.5 in "Pitchability," 81.1 in "Durability," and 78.5 in "Zone Control."
Lomeli is entering his junior season and is expected to anchor the pitching staff, something he did a great job of in 2019. He earned second-team All-WCC honors following a stellar season that saw him go 10-2 with a 3.05 earned run average across 88.1 innings pitched. He proved to be a workhorse in the rotation, going six or more innings in 9 of his starts, including a complete game shutout against Portland in April. Helping his WHIP, he walked just 13 batters and struck out 58. He twice picked up pitcher of the week honors: first, being named Rawlings Pitcher of the Week on April 8 and then being named WCC Pitcher of the Week on May 20.
Only one pitcher in the West Coast Conference slotted in higher in the rankings than Lomeli, as Alek Jacob of Gonzaga ranks 61st on the list. Right behind Lomeli in the WCC is Josh Agnew of LMU (68th) and Alex Pham of San Francisco. Overall, a total of six pitchers from the WCC are represented in the rankings.
The beginning of the 2020 baseball season is sure to bring excitement around a program that has seen wide success in recent seasons. Last year, the Gaels went 35-22, including a spectacular 22-3 at Louis Guisto Field. Saint Mary's made a run in the 2019 WCC Tournament, going all the way to the championship game before falling to LMU in heartbreak fashion 4-2 in ten innings.
The season begins on February 14 as the Gaels travel to Huntsville, Texas to take on Sam Houston State in a three-game series. As it concludes, the Gaels come back home for their 2020 home opener against Utah on February 17.
