BASE | Saint Mary's Earns First Home Victory Over Utah

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (2-2) secured their second victory of the season and their first win at home on Monday as they defeated Utah in a 9-6 decision.

DON'T STOP SWINGING
Saint Mary's was on fire in the box as they totaled 14 hits during the contest. Nico Lima was at the forefront of the Gaels' efforts as he went 3-for-4 while also posting four RBI's. Ryan Novis continued to shine offensively while going 3-for-5 and tallying a double for his second of the year. Gio Diaz was also a major part of the Gaels' offensive performance as he recorded an RBI after earning two singles on the day. Marc Goulart was another key component in Saint Mary's success as he went 2-for-3 for his first pair of hits this season.

KEEP ON RUNNING
Despite an early run from Utah in the top of the first, the Gaels immediately responded with three runs to take the lead including Lima's second homer of the season which brought home both Diaz and Novis for a three-run home run. SMC continued to add runs to the board throughout the next two innings for a 6-4 lead. In the fifth and seventh innings, Saint Mary's tallied one more run in each including an RBI double from Goulart which sent Shebloski home. The Gaels would cap off their runs in the eighth after Novis nailed a single up the middle to score Jacob Talamante and secure the win.

ON THE HILL
The Gaels sent six pitchers to the mound in the contest while recording five straight scoreless innings. Nathan Schneider opened the game for the Gaels through the first three innings before retiring in the fourth after posting four strikeouts, including a shutout inning in three-up, three-down fashion. Freshman Ryan Taurek would then enter the contest for his collegiate debut and pitched for two complete innings before retiring. Clark Candiotti, Andrew Hansen, Jackson Hulett, and Liam Steigerwald each saw the mound as they pitched in relief.

QUOTABLE

"I just talked to myself to relax, breathe and make pitches," said Ryan Taurek. "There was a lot of adrenaline out there and I felt like my slider was working really well today."
