SB | Saint Mary's Come Up Short Versus Cal

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (3-9) rallied to take a late lead against California (7-4) on Wednesday but two runs in the final inning for the Bears would spoil the Gaels' home opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After Cal scored three runs in the first, the Gaels began chipping away at their lead. Nikki Alexander would score the team's first run in the third as a Bears' outfielder struggled with a sun-ball and dropped a third out off the bat of Jayda Alaan

Halle Sullivan would add SMC's second run as she came all the way around on an inside the park home run. Sullivan's towering shot to left field bounced off the fence and caromed back towards the infield which allowed the speedy senior to race home. It was Sullivan's second career homer and first since her sophomore year.

In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Indya Smith delivered a huge hit down the left field line to score two and put the Gaels up 4-3. Smith's ball avoided the Bears' diving left fielder and bounced away to allow Kenedi Lopes to score from second and Alex Casas cross the plate from first.

Cal would knock together four singles in the top of the seventh to retake the lead and ultimately the contest. With the bases juiced, D'Asha Saiki sent a grounder up the middle to bring in the game-tying and game-winning runs.

The Gaels had seven hits in the loss. Alaan went 2-for-4 while the leadoff hitter Alexander also reached base twice with a single and walk.

Eryn McCoy pitched 5.1 innings of relief after coming in during the first inning but wouldn't receive a decision despite allowing just one run and scattering seven hits. Chloe Romero got the win for Cal as a reliever.

UP NEXT: SAINT MARY'S ROUND ROBIN
The Gaels will play four times this weekend with two games on both Friday and Saturday. Friday's game begins at 12:30 p.m. against Nevada and is immediately followed with a matchup against Utah Valley.
