GOLF | Gaels Finish Strong on Final Day at John Burns

LIHUE, Hawaii — Saint Mary's finished tied for seventh in a talented 21-team field at the John Burns Intercollegiate held at Wailua Golf Course. SMC shot 9-under in the final round, a 15-stroke improvement over their previous round.
THE LEADERBOARD
Michael Slesinski posted a top-10 finish as he ended up t-7th at 4-under overall. The redshirt junior was 3-under overall on Saturday including a 2-under showing on the front nine. Ash Hakim also shot 3-under in the final round for his best 18 holes of the tournament.
Blath Hathcoat finished t-30th after shooting 2-under on Saturday and was 1-over overall. Ethan Farnam was 6-over in the tournament and Dylan VanderVeer was 7-over.
Saint Mary's tied with No. 28 Cal and No. 6 Arizona. SMC bested one ranked team, No. 14 North Carolina, who finished 11th.
No. 10 Texas A&M won the tournament with a 19-under total across the three rounds. The Aggies shot 12-under in the final round to preserve the win. No. 40 New Mexico and No. 15 BYU followed behind in second and third, respectively.
New Mexico's Sam Choi won medalist honors by three strokes at 10-under.

Saint Mary's will have a few weeks off before returning to play on Mar. 9 at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic in Chula Vista, Calif.

FINAL ROUND HIGHLIGHTS
- Slesinski scored his second eagle of the event on the par 5 10th.
- Hathcoat had three straight birdies on 17th, 18th, and 1st.
- Four Gaels birdied hole 1.
- The Gaels 9-over total on par 3's was the second best in the tourney.
- Slesinski posted the second best score of any competitor on par 5's at 10-under.
