SB | Gaels Begin Season at NorCal KickOff

DAVIS, Calif. — Saint Mary's (0-2) opened their 2020 season on Thursday at the NorCal KickOff but would drop both of their games to Boise State (1-0) and UC Davis (1-0).

Game 1
Boise State 4, Saint Mary's 0

The Broncos scored twice in the second inning and added two more in the sixth to claim the first game of the day. Eryn McCoy got the start for the Gaels and struck out five batters in six innings. Freshman Vanessa Richie got her first career appearance in the circle and finished the contest with a scoreless frame while K'ing two hitters.

The Gaels had three hits in the game with all going for extra bases. Julia McCormack had a double as did freshman Alex Casas in her collegiate debut. Jayda Alaan added a triple as the team's two-hole hitter.

Both of the team's doubles came in the same inning but a double play would eliminate the would-be run. In the third inning, Saint Mary's had two runners in scoring position with two outs but Boise State would escape unscathed by inducing a ground out to second.

Game 2
UC Davis 6, Saint Mary's 2

The Gaels scored twice in the game but couldn't overcome six Aggie runs, including two unearned, as they dropped the second contest of the day.

SMC tallied each of their runs in the top of the seventh inning. After Hannah Chew reached on an error to open the frame, Halle Sullivan delivered a double down the left field line to plate the team's first run of the season. Nikki Alexander followed suit with a single to chase Sullivan home.

Saint Mary's had four hits in the game as McCormack collected another double, in addition to two walks, and Alaan notched a single. Eileen Perez made her season debut on the rubber and pitched five innings in the start.
