BASE | Gaels Clinch Series With Friday's Sweep

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (6-8) clinched the series against Seton Hall on Friday as they defeated the Pirates 6-2 in both games of the doubleheader.

BATS ON FIRE

Saint Mary's could not be stopped from the box as they tallied six runs with 10 hits in the contest. The Gaels put up an early lead as they scored their first run in the second inning off an error from Seton Hall before Campos launched a double in the third to drive home Nico Lima for SMC's second run. Following four scoreless innings and two runs from the Pirates, SMC added four runs to the board in the eighth scored on two doubles courtesy of Marc Goulart and Kyle Velazequez while Nick Mistone drilled an RBI single. Campos owned the best bat of the contest as he went 3-for-4 along with an RBI while Velazquez went 2-for-3 and Lima earned a 2-for-4 posting including SMC's fifth double of the game.

ON THE MOUND
Ty Madrigal posted his fourth start of the season as he pitched 6.1 complete innings while tallying two strikeouts including a punchout with three straight pitches one-two-three fashion. Madrigal would go on to allow two runs from Seton Hall before Liam Steigerwald entered the contest in the seventh to pitch in relief. Steigerwald tallied four strikeouts during his time on the hill while only allowing one hit and two walks. Steigerwald now owns a 2-0 record to lead the team.

THE FIRE CONTINUES

The Gaels were a hitting powerhouse as they posted 10 hits in the contest to provide their six runs. Giosso drilled a leadoff double in the second to get the momentum rolling before Campos immediately followed suit with a double of his own which sent home Giosso to secure the first run. Campos was then brought home courtesy of an RBI from Goulart to close out the inning. SMC went on to add another in the third before Campos doubled down the left field line in the fifth for a two-run RBI to score Novis and Lima. The sixth and final run was scored by Velazquez courtesy of a single to left field from Novis. Novis went 3-for-5 in the game while Javi Espinosa and Campos each went 2-for-4 with Campos earning three RBI's. 

PRIME PITCHING
Dalton Ponce started on the mound and earned his second win of the year for the Gaels as he pitched a complete five innings. The sophomore knocked down four strikeouts while allowing just three hits, one run and a single walk. Andrew Hansen pitched in relief for Ponce and he pitched three total innings which is his longest outing of the season. Hansen tallied five punchouts including back-to-back strikeouts with his first two batters while he did not give up a single hit. Nathan Schneider closed out the game in the top of the ninth for the Gaels and posted two strikeouts. Seton Hall made sufficient use of their bullpen as they had six total pitching changes throughout the game.

UP NEXT
The Gaels will host UC Davis and Nevada next week for two midweek matchups on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Saint Mary's will then travel to Stockton on Friday for a three-game series against Pacific.
