MORAGA, Calif. — In what became a different spring semester for Gaels Baseball, there were two different forms of success: on the field, and in the classroom. Once the season was suspended and ultimately cancelled, the Gaels hit the books hard during the spring semester, en route to a recent best in term grade point average for the entire time. As a unit, the Saint Mary's College Baseball team put up a 3.27 team grade point average for the 2020 spring semester.
Â
To break down the numbers further, 24 of the 38 student-athletes on the roster posted GPAs north of 3.0, which comes out to 63% of the team. 13 of those 24 featured GPAs of 3.50 or better, with two Gaels putting up perfect 4.0's in the spring:
Connor Linchey and
JC Santini. Linchey enjoyed the success as a freshman, a difficult feat to accomplish, and Santini did so while rehabbing from a back injury that prevented him from playing during the 2020 season.
Â
Nearly as impressive as the term GPA is the cumulative GPA that the Gaels sport at the end of the 2020 school year: 3.14. This number shot up with the term GPA as 11 Gaels set personal bests for grade point average during a semester.
Â
The baseball team was one of 15 Gaels teams to record GPAs of 3.0 or better during the spring semester. Of the 98 student-athletes recognized at the 2020 President's Scholar-Athlete Luncheon in April, ten of those came from the baseball team.Â
