SAN BRUNO, Calif. — The West Coast Conference announced the results of their 2021 spring season preseason coaches poll today and Saint Mary's was picked to finish second in the standings while Sebastian Schacht was named to the all-conference Preseason Team.
The Gaels received a league-best four first place votes and a total of 42 points in the team poll. SMC finished just three points behind Loyola Marymount who was chosen to win the WCC. Full poll results can be seen below.
Schacht earned a spot on the All-WCC Preseason Team as Saint Mary's lone representative. The midfielder was one of 11 members named to the team and was a First Team All-WCC selection last season. Just yesterday, Schacht was placed on the MAC Hermann Trophy Preseason Watch List which recognizes the top collegiate player every season.
The Gaels are the two-time defending conference champions and are 34-2-2 across the past two years. The Gaels had two All-Americans and six All-WCC First Team members on the roster last season but lost the majority of their starting lineup to graduation last spring.
In addition to Schacht, junior James Person (Second Team) and sophomore Valentin Kurz (Freshman Team) will look to anchor the team's efforts this year after also receiving all-conference recognition in 2019.
The Gaels first match is currently scheduled for Feb. 28 on the road against Portland. All games will be broadcasted for free on the WCC Network this season as no fans will be allowed in attendance at Saint Mary's Stadium.
