MSOC | Lions Shut out Gaels in Los Angeles
10/30/2021 8:45:00 PM | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES - The Saint Mary's Men's Soccer team fell 2-0 at Loyola Marymount Saturday night, dropping the Gaels to 9-6-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the West Coast Conference standings.
The Lions first threat of the night came in the 19th minute when a corner kick led to a header that was hauled in nicely by Nicholas Lapinid. Though the Gaels stopped the Lions on this attempt, it would be a harbinger of things to come for Saint Mary's.
In the 32nd minute an LMU shot of a corner piece was punched away by Lapinid, but the rebound was gathered by the Lions and a shot from right side near top of the penalty area was blasted across to the left corner of the net past the diving attempt by Lapinid making it 1-0 LMU. That would remain the score at the half as the Lions lead 9-4 in shots at the break.
The Gaels had an opportunity in the 40th minute but couldn't get a shot off while possessing the ball in the box, but shortly after that on the same possession they did create a good chance when a header by Riley Lynch sailed just high.
The Lions scored on another corner piece in the 66th minute after the initial header bounced into the air and then was headed again into the net for a goal and a 2-0 LMU lead.
In the 82nd minute Jack Vestberg drew a foul after he was pulled down near the sideline about halfway between midfield and the penalty area. Sebastian Schacht delivered a ball into the box off the set piece that was headed by Boyd Curry. It was a beautiful shot off the head of Curry but the Lions keeper made his best save of the night, diving to his right for a spectacular stop on the Gaels last true scoring opportunity of the match.
Shots ended up favoring the Lions 15 to 8 overall and 10 to 4 in shots on goal.
