MORAGA, Calif. — Three future Gaels have officially signed with Saint Mary's Softball on the national signing day for the fall semester. The Gaels are excited to welcome three high school student-athletes from the class of 2022 who have all played with each other to some degree.
Â
Victoria Cervantes will join the Gaels from Notre Dame High School in Salinas. The Spirits shortstop has been a standout during her first three seasons of play, albeit in limited fashion due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She was a full-time starter as a freshman, recording a .500 batting average on 42 hits, scoring 30 times and hitting eight home runs. The Aromas native saw her sophomore year canceled, and in a modified junior season, she hit three home runs and finished with a .316 batting average. She has been named to the PCAL All-League First Team, and Second Team All-State in her career.
Â
Another Victoria joins the fold, as Victoria Castillo makes the journey up to the East Bay and Saint Mary's. Castillo also attends high school in Salinas, her hometown, at Everett Alvarez High School. A two-sport athlete in both softball and basketball, Castillo has been a star at both for the Eagles. As a junior, Castillo went off to the tune of a .571 batting average, 1.629 OPS, and 15 RBIs with 22 runs scored, while playing outfield and middle infield. She's had a bevy of awards linked to her name, including First Team All-League in softball and Second Team All-League in basketball. She excels in the classroom as well, having been ranked top-five in her junior class in GPA and taking home multiple AP Scholar Awards.
Â
Rylee Gomez rounds out this trio from the Central Coast, hailing from Watsonville and attending Watsonville High School. Much like Castillo, Gomez has lettered in both softball and basketball, but is choosing to continue her softball career for the Gaels. Her average has climbed from her freshman year (.283) to her junior campaign (.571), and that led her to First Team All-League honors last season. The Wildcatz also took home the CCS Division 1 championship with Gomez playing a crucial role in that championship run.
Â
"We are thrilled to add Victoria, Tori, and Rylee to our roster," head coach
Sonja Garnett said. "They have been playing together for several years, and will transition nicely into our program. All three are versatile athletes that bring different skills to the lineup from speed to power. It is a great day to be a Gael!"
