MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (0-2-2) battled hard against Pepperdine on Saturday afternoon but came up just short in a 1-0 loss.
Pepperdine was picked to finish third in the West Coast Conference preseason coaches poll but the Gaels hung tight with the Waves for all 90 minutes. There was only a four shot attempt advantage for Pepperdine in the game and both teams managed five corner kicks.
Saint Mary's nearly took the lead in the 58th minute as Vanessa Gaitan drew a foul in the box to set up a penalty kick for Laura Trapero Sanz. The defender put a charge into the ball towards the left side of the net but Waves' goalkeeper Zoe Clevely made a diving stop to keep the game scoreless.
Just over two minutes later, Pepperdine scored the only goal of the game. Leyla McFarland sent a short through ball past the Gaels' defense and Tori Waldeck finished from close range for the game-winner.
The Gaels finished the contest with eight shots and Emily Jensen led the team with three attempts. Taylor Poland made her fourth straight start in goal for SMC and made eight saves.
UP NEXT: SANTA CLARA
The Gaels will face the Santa Clara Broncos on the road next week on Mar. 6. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Fans can watch the game live by following the link on the team's schedule page.
