MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's softball will retake the field this week for their first game action in exactly 11 months when COVID-19 brought the 2020 season to a screeching halt. The Gaels currently have 40 games scheduled with all contests being played within the state of California.
As a reminder for this season, fans will not be permitted to attend home games in-person but a live stream will be available for free for these contests. Links to the live streams can be found on the team's schedule page.
SMC begins their season this Thursday by hosting Nevada for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. The Gaels and Wolfpack met once last year with Nevada edging out a close 7-5 win at Cottrell Field.
Saint Mary's will then play four straight games against Sacramento State with two being played in Sacramento (Feb. 13) and two in Moraga (Feb. 19). Two days later, the Gaels will travel to Berkeley for their annual series with the Golden Bears. The Sunday doubleheader begins at noon.
SMC will play two other Bay Area schools to round out their February schedule. The Gaels will face UC Davis in doubleheader action on the 24th before hosting San Jose State on the 26th at 1 p.m. Saint Mary's and SJSU will play a doubleheader in Moraga on the 28th as well beginning at noon.
Head coach Sonja Garnett will then take her team on the road for the next two weeks for a couple of three-game series against Cal Poly (Mar. 6-7) and San Diego State (Mar. 13-14). The Gaels went 1-1 against Cal Poly last year and averaged five runs a game in those two contests.
California Baptist will roll into Moraga on Mar. 19 for a doubleheader with first pitch occurring at 1 p.m. SMC will then play at Santa Clara on Mar. 26 and at home versus Pacific on Apr. 2. Both games will be played as non-conference games.
The Gaels begin West Coast Conference action the following week on Apr. 9 as part of a three-game series against BYU. Saint Mary's will next travel down to take on the Fresno State Bulldogs the following weekend (Apr. 17) for their final two non-conference games of the year.
SMC returns to Cottrell Field for a three-game set with Santa Clara between Apr. 24-25 and then faces Pacific the following weekend in Stockton (May 1-2).
The team's final homestand will be played against San Diego between May 8-9. The Gaels and Toreros will play a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon and wrap up the series with an 11 a.m. Sunday contest. Senior Day will be celebrated during this weekend with more details to come later this season.
Saint Mary's concludes their 2021 schedule with three games at Loyola Marymount on May 14-15. While no WCC contests were played in 2020 due to the pandemic, the Gaels went 7-8 in conference games during Garnett's first year as head coach in 2019 and the team will look to build off of that success this season.
