SAN JOSE, Calif. — Saint Mary's (2-4) went down to the final set in a road match with San Jose State (7-0) but came just short in a narrow 4-3 loss.
The Gaels earned the doubles point by getting wins from their No. 2 and 3 tandems. Jocelyn Massey and Aubane Ville rolled to a 6-0 victory on Court 2 and then Jordan Harris and Liesl Pieters finished the job in a close 7-5 match. Mariia Kozyreva and Danielle McIntyre were also edged on Court 1 by a 7-5 score.
No. 17 Kozyreva put SMC up 2-0 with a quick 6-0, 6-4 victory against SJSU's top singles player Alba Pedrero Galindo. The Spartans answered back with wins on Courts 3 and 4 however to tie things up 2-all.
Massey tallied her second win of the day by earning a 7-6(3), 6-4 result as the Gaels' No. 5 player but shortly after SJSU tied the match up again with a win on Court 6.
All eyes went to Court 2 where Harris squared off with San Jose State's Rozalina Youseva. Harris dominated the first set 6-0 before falling in a close second set, 4-6. Youseva ended up besting her opponent in the third and deciding set with a 6-3 win to seal the match for SJSU.
Saint Mary's will begin conference play next week with two home matches in two days. The Gaels host BYU on Friday at 2 p.m. and then take on San Diego at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
