SANTA CLARA, Calif. — No. 20 Saint Mary's remains unbeaten five games into the season as they took down Santa Clara 3-1 on the road on Sunday. The Gaels improved to 4-0-1 and 2-0-1 in WCC play. SMC is now 17-0-4 over their last 21 conference games dating back to the 2017 season.
Saint Mary's struck first in the match as Andrew Rotter tracked down a long cross by Andre Hoglin and headed it into the back of the net in the 24th minute. The beauty was Rotter's second score of the season.
SMC led 1-0 going into the halftime break and the two teams combined for just three shots in the match to that point.
Things began to open up in the second half however as the Gaels doubled their lead minutes into the period. Saint Mary's scored on another headed ball with Boyd Curry getting credit on the goal and Louis Sterobo receiving the assist. Curry's 50th minute goal would prove to be the game-winner.
In the 69th minute of action, Lucas Andrews scored his second of the season to give Saint Mary's a comfortable 3-0 lead with just over 20 minutes to play. The senior's goal marked the first time SMC has scored thrice in a game this season and the first time since Senior Day of 2019 in a 5-1 thumping over Portland.
SCU (1-4, 1-3 WCC) responded with a goal just 87 seconds later on a penalty kick by Javier Ruiz Duran but it was too little too late as Saint Mary's held on for the 3-1 win.
Each team took eight shots in the match while SMC took more corner kicks, 3-1. The match was highly physical and the teams were whistled for a total of 36 fouls with 20 being called on the Broncos.
UP NEXT: SAN FRANCISCO
The Gaels will now take on the Dons next Sunday inside Saint Mary's Stadium beginning at 1 p.m. Fans can follow along by clicking the links on the team's schedule page.
