Gaels Come From Behind to Salvage Point on Senior Day vs. LMU…
Saint Mary's outshot LMU 20-11 and found the equalizer in the 73rd minute to draw 1-1 with LMU on Senior Day back on October 25. True freshman Cyrus Shafie found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal, scoring off of a long throw-in out of the hands of outside back Ryan Firestone. Firestone, as well as sophomore midfielder Jaydon Whittaker, got credit for the assists, as Shafie put home the flick from Whittaker to tie the game at one.
Saint Mary's continued to pepper the Lions goalkeeper, forcing a game-high eight saves, but could not find the winner in the closing minutes. The Gaels earned their sixth draw of the season to tie the program record for the third consecutive year. They will have a chance to knock off a ranked San Diego squad for the first time since 2021 and the first time inside Torero Stadium since 2008 on Friday night.
Second Consecutive 20-Shot Match and Third of Season…
Shot attempts came in bunches the last time out for the Gaels, as they recorded a game-high 20 shots in their 1-1 draw with LMU. The 20-shot performance marked the third time this season and second consecutive 20+ shot match, as Saint Mary's fired off 21 shots in a narrow 3-2 defeat to Denver earlier that week. Including 16 shot attempts in a scoreless draw with Santa Clara the week prior, the Gaels will enter Friday's match averaging 19 shots per match over their last three contests. The Gaels will test a San Diego squad that allows just 10.6 shot attempts and 1.38 goals per game on Friday night, looking for their second result against a ranked opponent this season.
Gaels Set to End Season with Two 5+ Goal Scorers for First Time Since 2019…
Saint Mary's took a step forward on the offensive side of the field in 2026, scoring six more goals than they did in 2025. Part of that offensive success has been the team's two leading goal scorers in Luke Schaefer and Cameron Kobey. Schaefer recorded his second career brace in the team's 3-2 defeat to Denver two weeks ago and with that performance, jumped into the team lead with six goals on the year. Second-year midfielder Cameron Kobey sits just one back with five goals over his 16 games played, as the duo are the first to record 5+ goals in the same season since 2019. That year, the Gaels had three goal scorers with at least five goals, as they won 16 games and earned their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
Series History…
Saint Mary's will head to Torero Stadium on Friday with an all-time record of 12-32-10 against USD. The Toreros are on a current three-match win streak dating back to 2023, while Saint Mary's will look for its first result since a 1-1 draw back in 2022. The Gaels last beat a ranked San Diego squad back in 2019, defeating No. 16 USD 3-0 in Moraga. They'll look for their first road win since 2008 and just the fourth road victory all-time against the Toreros on Friday.
ABOUT THE TOREROS (9-4-3, 4-1-2 WCC)
San Diego enters the final week of the regular season at 9-4-3 and 4-1-2 in WCC action. The Toreros have been at the top of the WCC mountain for the better part of the last decade and have put together another quality season here in 2026 with a second place conference finish on the line on Friday. Although Portland has won nine straight and locked up the league title two weeks ago, the Toreros have been tested all season long with two matches against the number one ranked team in the nation and a total of four ranked matchups in the entire year. USD upset No. 1 Washington in its season opener with a 2-1 victory for its fifth all-time win over a number one ranked team. They will host Saint Mary's in the regular season finale Friday night, riding a three-match conference win streak.
The Toreros rank second in the WCC with 31 total goals this season including nine from senior forward Steven Ramirez. Ramirez recorded his second brace of the season last time out, netting two goals and recording an assist in a 4-2 shootout win over Seattle U on Halloween Night. Taj Eagleston has also started in all 16 games for USD and ranks second on the team with six goals and a pair of assists. San Diego is led by head coach Brian Quinn who is in his 19th season with the program and eighth as a head coach after taking over in 2018. He will look to take San Diego to its fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament and contend for the first ever West Coast Conference Tournament crown.
