MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (3-4, 1-0 WCC) picked up a 4-3 win over BYU (11-6, 0-1 WCC) at home on Friday to start their conference schedule on a high note and snap a two-match losing skid.
The Gaels came from behind in doubles action to claim the point and won close matches on Courts 1 and 2. After the Cougars took a 6-3 decision from their No. 3 duo, Mariia Kozyreva and Danielle McIntyre edged their opponents 7-5 to tie things up. Jocelyn Massey and Aubane Ville then clinched the point in a tiebreaker, 7-6(3).
Despite the close 4-3 match score, the Gaels quickly won the contest by taking the first three singles matches. Kozyreva advanced to 6-0 in singles action this season by defeating the Cougars top player Anastasia Abramyan, 6-0, 6-3.
McIntyre also won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 on Court 3 to give the Gaels a 3-0 advantage in the match. Gabriela Tevez, playing as the team's No. 4 player, then locked down the match by beating Helen Jiao in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 2-6.
Saint Mary's has a quick turnaround as they play San Diego at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Korth Tennis Complex.
