SB | Saint Mary's Drops Two in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. — Saint Mary's (9-19, 0-3 WCC) couldn't overcome a powerhouse Fresno State (27-7) team on Saturday as they fell in both games of their doubleheader.

GAME 1 RECAP
Fresno State 8, Saint Mary's 0 (6)

The Gaels had a tough time getting the offense going against Bulldogs' pitcher Hailey Dolcini who ended up tossing a complete game shutout. The senior earned 13 strikeouts against SMC batters while surrendering only one hit.

Indya Smith picked up the lone hit for Saint Mary's which was a double to center field in the fourth inning. Smith leads the team in batting average this year at .317 and now has hits in eight of the Gaels' last 10 games.

Eileen Perez started in the circle for SMC and went 4.1 innings before exiting. Eryn McCoy pitched the final 1.1 frames in relief.

Fresno State scored two in the third, two in the fourth, and four in sixth to end the contest via the run rule. Kaitlyn Jennings delivered the big blow to the Gaels with a walk-off grand slam.

GAME 2 RECAP
Fresno State 5, Saint Mary's 0

Saint Mary's offense began to heat up more in the second contest of the afternoon but couldn't scratch home a run in the loss. The Gaels had five hits in the ballgame in addition to three walks and three hit-by-pitches but left 10 runners on base.

SMC's one through four hitters all picked up singles as well as Marissa Nishihara who was in the 9-hole. The Gaels opened the contest with three consecutive hits but had an out on the basepaths, a line out, and a groundout to end the threat.

One inning later, Saint Mary's had three runners reach base but Fresno State managed to escape danger by turning a double play and inducing another groundout. In the third, the Gaels loaded the bases with two outs but once again, the Bulldogs wiggled out of trouble by recording a ground ball out.

Fresno State scored twice in the first, added two in the third, and one more run in the sixth. Kayla Scott entered in relief during the third inning and pitched well as she gave up only one run and struck out five of the 12 batters she faced.

UP NEXT: SANTA CLARA
