AZUSA, Calif. — After a long night of running on Friday, and an even longer day on Saturday, Saint Mary's Track can exhale after competing in the Bryan Clay Invite. Going up against some of the best competition they will face this season in the large annual event, the Gaels continued to shine brightly. As has been the case during the 2021 season, personal records were hit, and school records fell yet again for Saint Mary's.
RAVING ABOUT RAYNA
Having already broken the 1500m school record this season, Rayna Stanziano continued to one-up herself. On Saturday at the Bryan Clay Invite, she entered into multiple events, and set Saint Mary's records in both. First, Stanziano set the school record in the 800m with a time of 2:10.61, finishing just six one-hundreths of a second away from winning her heat. This was good for ninth overall in the race. She then broke the 1500m school record again with a time of 4:24.39, a mark that would have won any other heat had she raced in another heat.
MEN HITTING THE MARK
Stanziano wasn't the only Gael featuring some new bests on the track Saturday. Nolan Dozier again ran in the 5000m for Saint Mary's, and again he set the Saint Mary's record with a new personal-best of 14:14.31 This marks the second time in as many tries that Dozier has set a Saint Mary's record in the 5000m. Joining him in the 5000m was Chandler Maciel, who hit a PR with a 14:43.94, and Moses Bojorquez, who sported a 14:48.23. A host of other Gaels hit personal records in the 1500m races, led by Anthony Vazquez (3:59.64), and Derek D'Amelia (3:59.93), who each went sub-4:00. Payton Fox, Thomas Osborne, Diego Huerta, and Richard McLain also hit PRs in the 1500m.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
Among other top performers on the women's side, Emily Field and Trinity Santana ran their first 3000 Steeplechase on Friday night and survived. Field then came back nearly set a PR in the 1500m on Saturday. Abigayle Mitchell continued her strong running as of late with a pair of PRs in the 800m and 1500m, (2:11.39 in the 800m, 5th in her heat; and 4:30.30 in the 1500m, 6th in her heat). Hannah Wohlenberg also came out on top in her heat of the 5000m on the women's side, pacing the pack with a 17:16.72. Molly Dreher also picked up a PR for Saint Mary's in the 1500m.
KINSEY QUOTES
"Hannah was hoping for a big night to go after the Saint Mary's 5000m record and pursue a sub-17-minute effort. Unfortunately, the pace was pretty pedestrian after the first mile (about 5:40) so that made it difficult. But, as a veteran runner, she was able to make the race tactical and make a big push in the last 1200m to win by about 60 meters." – head coach, Marty Kinsey
UP NEXT
Saint Mary's will have one final tune-up before the WCC Invite on May 8. The Gaels will race next weekend at Fresno State at their Invitational, making a return trip to the city of Fresno. The Gaels raced twice at Fresno Pacific earlier this spring. The WCC Invite will feature the top runners in the conference, at Livermore.
