MORAGA, Calif. — Blake Hathcoat begins play tomorrow at the NCAA Regionals held in Albuquerque, N.M. on the campus of the University of New Mexico. The senior qualified for the postseason tournament as an individual and will be vying for a chance to move on to the NCAA Championship hosted in Scottsdale, Ariz.
There are 14 teams competing at the regional including No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 12 Arizona State, No. 14 Texas A&M, No. 22 Texas Tech, New Mexico, Stanford, Oregon State, Boise State, South Carolina, Nevada, San Diego, New Mexico State, Oakland, and Prairie View A&M. In addition to Hathcoat, four other individuals will also be in the field: Gavin Cohen and Riley Lewis from Loyola Marymount, Tommy Stephenson from Fresno State, and Daniel O'Laughlin from Colorado.
Hathcoat's tee time for the first round is at 8:42 a.m. Pacific and he will be playing alongside Chris Handy from Oakland and Zane Brooks from Prairie View A&M. The group will tee off on hole 1.
In order for Hathcoat to advance to the championship round, he will need to be the top finisher among the competitors from a non-advancing team. The five teams with the best scores will book their ticket to Scottsdale in addition to the best individual.
The competition will be stiff in the tournament but Hathcoat has played exceptionally well over the past few weeks in amateur events. At the NCGA's Four-Ball Championship last weekend, Hathcoat and his teammate Michael Slesinski finished third out of 88 pairs. The following day, the Fresno native competed at a US Open local qualifier and tied for second out of 84 golfers to advance to final qualifiers.
Earlier this spring, Hathcoat was named to the All-WCC First Team after leading Saint Mary's during the regular season in most statistical categories. He posted a below-par 71.33 stroke average, recorded par or better on 22 of his 33 rounds, and won two events between the fall and spring. This year will mark the third time Hathcoat has played at the NCAA Regionals with previous appearances in both 2018 and 2019.
