LAST TIME OUT
A goal with 29 seconds left by San Diego allowed the Toreros to escape with a tie and keep the Gaels from their first WCC win of the season on Friday night, bringing SMC to 5-4-2 on the season and 0-1-1 in WCC play.
SMC scored in the 36th minute when Bastian Toelhoej gathered the ball at midfield and lofted a perfect pass ahead to Wade Muttitt. The sophomore from Crowethorne, England raced ahead of every USD defender and flicked right-footed shot over the keeper that ricocheted off the crossbar and into the goal for a 1-0 Gales lead. It was Muttitt's second goal of the season and Toelhoej's second assist.
ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE
The Spartans ended the 2021 season with a 6-9-2 record and a 2-4-2 mark in Big Ten action, and had to replace their leading scorer. Michigan State had three players named to the Big Ten Players to Watch list in the preseason, in Graduate midfielder Jack Beck, redshirt-senior defender Will Perkins, and junior forward Grayson Mercer were all honored by the league.
Freshman midfielder Jack Guggemos' three goals this season are the most by a Spartan freshman since Jack Beck and Farai Mutatu both scored three during the 2018 season. With wins over Michigan and Wisconsin, Michigan State recorded back-to-back shutout wins for the first time since 2017
Michigan State lost 4-1 road at Penn State on October 7. Freshman midfielder Jack Guggemos netted MSU's lone goal of the night. The Spartans had their three-match Big Ten Conference unbeaten streak halted with the loss,
It's just the second meeting all time between the two programs, and the first since September 17 of 1999 when the Spartans got a 2-1 win in Moraga.
ABOUT STANFORD
Stanford is coming off a 2-2 tie against Oregon State and suffered their first loss of the season the game before against No. 1 Washington.
In the first 10 years of his Stanford career, Head Coach Jeremy Gunn has engineered the rapid ascent of the Stanford program, including three straight NCAA championships from 2015-17. Stanford has been ranked as high as No. 3 this season, and is currently No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches top-25 poll.
Midfielder Will Reilly was named the Pac-12 player of the week on October 3. He scored twice and assisted on another goal in Stanford's 5-1 win over California. It was his first career brace and helped Stanford and extend its unbeaten run to nine matches at the time, the program's longest since 2001.
The Gaels got a 1-0 overtime win at Stanford last season, their first win on "The Farm" since 1995. It was Saint Mary's first win against the Cardinal since that that meeting in September of '95. However, the Gaels have a three-game unbeaten streak against Stanford even though their all-time record against the Cardinal is 5-22-3.
