MORAGA, Calif. — Just announced, Saint Mary's Softball has released its entire 2023 schedule for the upcoming spring. The Gaels will play 55 games during the 2023 campaign, including 24 of those at Cottrell Field. The Gaels will be all over for games, with trips to Hawaii, Utah, and Southern California all on the docket. Let's take a look at some of the highlights of the brand new 2023 schedule…
HOME HIGHLIGHTS
The slate of 24 home games begin on February 17 when the Gaels host a tournament at Cottrell Field, and will have four-consecutive home games from February 17-19. The three-day event begins with the Gaels host Utah State twice, followed by home games against UC San Diego and San Jose State. February 17 and 19 will feature three total games each day at SMC, with just one game scheduled for February 18.
Saint Mary's will have six more non-conference home games before WCC begins on April 7. The Gaels welcome in Michigan for a matchup against a top-tier program on February 28 at 2:00 pm. After a few weeks on the road, the Gaels will come back on March 17-18 to host doubleheaders against Darmouth and Maine. UC Davis (April 4), Boise State (April 17), California (April 26), and Sacramento State (May 5) are the additional non-conference games at Cottrell Field.
SEASON OF ALOHA
The 2023 season officially kicks off February 10-12 in Honolulu, Hawaii as the Gaels take part in the Paradise Classic, hosted by the University of Hawaii. Three of the five games for SMC will be against Hawaii, with their additional two games against Utah Tech. This marks a return to the annual tournament, which last saw the Gaels in attendance during the 2019 season. They've also made trips to Hawaii during the 2016, 2013, 2008, and 2007.
WCC ACTION
Saint Mary's will host in three of their five West Coast Conference series this season, beginning with their WCC opening series on April 7-8 against San Diego. The three-game series begins with a single game on April 7 before a doubleheader on April 8, one day before Easter Sunday. The following weekend, the Gaels host Santa Clara for three games on April 15-16. The next two weekends will feature the Gaels on the road (Loyola Marymount, April 22-23 and Pacific, April 29-30), before returning home for the final weekend of the year. Senior Weekend will take place on May 12-13 against BYU, the final time that SMC and BYU will meet up as members of the WCC.
THOUGHTS FROM COACH G
"We are looking forward to opening season in Hawaii this year and hosting a slew of home games, highlighted by the University of Michigan. Our schedule features teams from across the country, and from all over the RPI rankings.
"Over the past few years the WCC has been improving as a softball conference. Last year we had a huge jump in RPI as a conference, and there was a lot more parity within our six teams.
"By the time we hit conference this year we will have 36 games under our belt, and a ton of experience for our team, which includes 8 freshmen. It doesn't matter who is on the other side, I know this team will play with pride and grit, and I can't wait to hit the field with them." – head coach, Sonja Garnett
