BASE | Walks Hurt Gaels in Battle with No. 19 Gauchos

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Baseball again played the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos well despite a two-run loss just like in their first meeting on March 22, this time by a 4-2 score.
UCSB is currently ranked No. 10 by College Baseball, No. 19 by D-1 Baseball, and No. 23 by Baseball America, but SMC gave them all they could handle for the second time this season.
Saint Mary's struck first in the first when Nick Mistone singled up the middle and Chris Santiago doubled down the right field line with one out. Kyle Velazquez would drive a ball to right for a sac fly to put the Gaels up 1-0.
Ryan Daugherty pitched well as the opener in the Tuesday match up, but ran into a little trouble in the third with a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. Preston Howey came in with the bases loaded and two outs and recorded a strike out to end the threat.
The Gaels would use that momentum in the top of the fourth when Blake McDonald doubled to start the inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Coleman Schmidt ripped a ball down the third base line that couldn't be handled and McDonald came in to score for a 2-0 Saint Mary's lead.
The Gauchos loaded the bases in the fifth with a walk sandwiched between two singles, and another pair of walks plated UCSB's first two runs before the Gaels replaced Howey with Ryan Sanders. The lefty would induce a grounder for a fielder's choice that produced a run before striking out the next batter to keep to just a one-run deficit at 3-2.
Sanders remained in the game in the seventh when an error, a walk, and an infield single loaded the bases, before another walk led to a run for the Gauchos to make it 4-2.
UP NEXT
The Gaels will wrap up WCC play with a trip to Portland to play the Pilots May 13-15.
