ABOUT SACRAMENTO STATE
Sacramento State is coming off a season that saw the Hornets battle for a Big West Tournament berth right up until the final match of the 2021 regular season, finishing 5-10-3 overall and 3-4-2 in league play. They return 18 letter winners and nine starters from last year's squad, bolstered by a nine-member incoming class that includes a trio of Division I transfers from the likes of Santa Clara, UCLA, and San Diego State.
Â
All-Big West Conference honorable mention selectionsÂ
Titus Washington andÂ
Jaime Robles, along with all-freshman team honoreeÂ
Jhared Willcot, rejoin the ranks as Sacramento State brings back its top four scorers from a season ago, including leading scorer sophomoreÂ
Michael Gonzalez who paced the team with four goals and nine points in 2021.
Â
Saint Mary's leads the all-time series with Sacramento State by a 14-6-8 count dating back to 1991. The Gaels are unbeaten in the last five meetings (5-0-1) with the Hornets, including victories in each of the last four head-to-head clashes -- all by the shutout. Sacramento State's last win in the series -- and its last win in Moraga -- came in 2015 by a 2-0 score, while its last goal in the series came in a 1-1 draw in 2016 at home. The Hornets are 3-7-4 on the road against the Gaels, losing their last two trips to Moraga.
Â
The Hornets lost to 3-0 at No. 3 Washington to start the season, before defeating San Jose State 2-1 at home. Â

ABOUT UC DAVIS
Head Coach
Dwayne Shaffer enters his 26th season as coach of the Aggies, leading a group that includes 13 newcomers and 15 returnees. Among that group of returnees, just three are upperclassmen with two seniors in
Andy Velasquez and
Emmanuel Doherty. Shaffer's teams have advanced to the Big West Championship game in three out of the last four seasons with the fourth being 2021's semifinal round appearance.
Velasquez was named a 2021 All-Big West Conference Honorable Mention last season. He was named to the Big West Conference All-Freshman Team in 2018, was an All-Big West Conference Second Team selection in 2019, and was also named the Big West Preseason All-Conference Team in 2021.Â
He's appeared in 57 games over three seasons, including all 20 in back-to-back seasons with starts in 39 of those 40 games. Velasquez was the Aggies' third-leading goal scorer in 2021, netting a career-high five goals and also setting career-highs with two assists and 11 shots on goal.Â
Â
This is the second straight season UC Davis has been picked to finish in the top three of the Big West. Over the last five seasons, Coach Shaffer's teams have never been picked lower than fourth.
Â
The Gaels are 5-8-4 all time against UC Davis, with the Aggies winning 3-0 in Davis, Calif. last season.
