MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team walked away with a 2-2 draw to UC Davis on Saturday and extended its season-long unbeaten streak to four games. The Gaels jumped out to two separate leads in the match with goals from Luke Schaefer and Rafael Suarez but the Aggies found ways to level the game with equalizers in the 57th and 83rd minute to draw the match 2-2.

Schaefer's first half goal went down as his third of the season, sitting just one behind the team lead of four held by sophomore captain Cameron Kobey. Suarez's go-ahead goal at the time would go down as the first of his collegiate career as the sophomore midfielder logged all 90 minutes in a hard-fought performance in the middle of the pitch. Sam Bentley finished with a game-high four saves in what was his sixth start of the season.

Saint Mary's extended its season-long unbeaten streak to four games for the longest since a six-game unbeaten stretch back in 2023. The Gaels will kick off West Coast Conference action next week and host San Francisco on Saturday, September 26 at 1:00 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Saint Mary's pulled off results last weekend while coming from behind but on Saturday, they got off to a hot start with the opening goal in the 13th minute to take a 1-0 lead. On a recycled ball, outside back Talan Rochelle whipped in a left-footed cross that produced a thunderous header from Luke Schaefer at the top of the six-yard box to give the Gaels a one-goal lead. Saint Mary's outshot UC Davis 7-6 and produced the better chances over the first 45 minutes to maintain a 1-0 lead at the half.

The Aggies flipped the script though to start the second half with some quality early pressure and chances. They would be rewarded for their efforts with a goal against the run of play off the right foot of Luke Castagnola in the 57th minute to knot the game at one. Saint Mary's answered with its second goal of the game in the 76th minute off a corner kick. Cyrus Shafie curled in a right-footed corner kick attempt from the far side and a simple redirection from Rafael Suarez would be enough to find the bottom corner of the net for his first collegiate goal. The assist for Shafie would also go down as his first career point for the true freshman out of Los Altos.

Saturday's match was not short of drama with three replay reviews as well as an awarded penalty kick back in the first half that was saved from Bentley. The match would take another turn against the Gaels as UC Davis found a way to equalize for the second time off a throw-in that tied the game at two in the 83rd minute. The match would finish in a draw but the Gaels found a way to earn another point and extend their unbeaten streak to four games.

90-minute performances came from Talan Rochelle, Cameron Kobey, Rafael Suarez, Ben Erwin and Eemil Laamanen as the Gaels will now gear up for the start of conference play against San Francisco next Saturday.
