NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Saint Mary's Men's Soccer got a goal in the 85th minute from freshman
Bastian Toelhoej to extend their unbeaten streak to five games after earning a 1-1 draw against CSUN.
LATE GAME HEROICS
The Matadors scored in the 72nd minute with a wide-open shot from inside the penalty area on the right side of the net, and it looked like the Gaels might suffer their first loss since September 1 against Sacramento State.
Â
But SMC fought on and almost equalized the score on a free kick from
Louis Sterobo in the 79th minute. It went through the hands of keeper and was loose behind him, but the CSUN defense cleared it before Saint Mary's could get to the loose ball.
Â
But in the 85th minute, Sterobo launched another free kick toward the net from just inside midfield that was headed by
Christian Engmann and caromed over to Toelhoej. The Copenhagen, Denmark native put it on net and it deflected off the keeper and a defender before getting into the back of the goal to even the score at 1-1. It was Toelhoej's second goal of the season and first since the season opener.
CLOSE CALLS
The Gaels almost completed their furious comeback when a left-footed shot by
Riley Lynch required a leaping save from the keeper to punch it away in the 87th minute.
CSUN came out attacking early and almost made the Gaels pay for a turnover in the 11th minute, but keeper
Jack Landreth made a save and Engmann and
Boyd Curry combined to clear the ball. Landreth also made a beauty of a kick save in the 70th minute with a little help from
Valentin Kurz who shoulder bumped the attacker who had gotten ahead of the Gaels defense.
Â
SMC threatened in 18th minute when Engmann headed one from left post to the right side of the net, but the Matadors keeper reached up to make a sure save.
Cade Cowan had a near miss off his right foot in the 64th minute that went just wide to right side of the net when he attempted to boot a cross out of mid air.
