THE LAST TIMEOUT
Saint Mary's battled in a physical contest in their first Conference game against University of San Francisco where they lost 2-0.
The Dons outshot the Gales 9-3 in the first half before SMC outshot USF 9-2 in the second. In just the first nine minutes of the game,
Taylor Poland dove to the bottom right side of the post saving a shot from USF Marissa Vasquez. Throughout the half, three different Gaels attempted shots in the first half,
Sydney Middaugh,
Briana Salvetti, and
Makena Carr.
Gaels trailing 2-0 at the start of the second half, SMC made adjustments allowing them to outshoot USF 9-2. Seven minutes into the second half, Middaugh took a shot, two minutes later
Emily Jensen attempted for the first time in the game. In just two minutes, the Gaels put up three shots, one by Carr and two by Salvetti that all happened to be a bit off target. A few minutes later
Alessandra Towle took a shot that was saved by USF goalkeeper Kira Ybarra.
In the 76th minute another shot was taken to the bottom left of the net by Middaugh. In the 82nd minute Jensen shot to the center of the net where it was saved once again by Ybarra. With less than five minutes to go, Middaugh attempted her fourth shot of the game. She shot the ball where it was blocked by a USF defender.
ABOUT SANTA CLARA
The Broncos are coming off from a strong season last year of 11-7-3. They started off their 2023 season strong with a 7-0 record. The team hit a four game cold spell with losses to No. 3 Stanford and USF, and ties to Cal Berkley and Cal Poly.
After a rocky couple of games, Santa Clara is back with a two game win streak against Pacific (6-0) and Pepperdine (1-0). Farrah Walters is the Bronco to watch out for where she led the team with a hat trick, scoring in the 17th, 24th, and 59th minute against Pepperdine. Because of her hat trick, Walters was named WCC Player of the Week. This was her second hat trick in her career as a Bronco. Walters also leads Santa Clara in goals (6), points (14), shots (22), and shots on goal (15).
