MORAGA, Calif. - Tack on another accolade for the Gaels' Riley Lynch this week, as he has been named to the College Soccer News Men's National Team of the Week for his two-goal, one-assist week in SMC's wins over Pacific and USF.
Every week the College Soccer News Team of the Week recognizes players who played a key role in the success their teams had during the week. The most dramatic moment for Lynch when he scored the game winner off a free kick in the 74th minute. After Wade Muttitt drew a penalty just outside the box, Lynch would take the free kick and bend a left-footed shot around Pacific's wall and into the left side of the net, past a frozen goal keeper who was screened by the traffic in front. The goal gave the Gaels a 3-2 win on Lynch's seventh goal of the season.
Lynch got his assist on SMC's first goal against Pacific, after he forced a Tigers turnover about 40 yards from the goal. Lynch gathered the ball and worked his way to the left of the six-yard box where he blasted a left-footed shot that forced a diving, one-handed save from the keeper.
The rebound came right to Muttitt who was charging towards the goal and he chipped it in with a left-footed shot at the edge of the six-yard area for a 1-0 Gaels lead. That gave Lynch his fifth assist of the year via the rebound.
Lynch hammered in the final nail in the coffin on the Dons in San Francisco, putting in a rebound of a Jack Vestberg shot to make it a 3-0 Gaels lead in the 65th minute for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
The Chandler, Ariz. native helped spark the Gaels offense to their first goal of the night as well. He raced the other way on a counter, and his cross was headed away by the Dons defense, before teammate Justin Sosa drew a penalty that led to the Gaels first goal.
Lynch leads the WCC in total shots and shots per game, and is third overall in the conference with his eight goals. His five assists are tied for fifth in the WCC as well, putting him in a tie for second in points with 21.
The Gaels will wrap up the home slate and honor their seniors this Saturday at 1:00 pm against Portland.
