LAST TIME OUT
Saint Mary's Baseball split a double header in rainy conditions against Xavier University on Saturday, with their win coming in another dominant performance by Derik Eaquinto in a 4-2 win.

The transfer from Salt Lake Community College got through 7.2 innings before allowing a solo home run to the short porch in right, where it is just 304 feet down the right field line in Joseph P. Arrenivar Field on the campus of Pittsburg High. He got a fly out to shallow right from the next batter to complete his day after 109 pitches, allowing just four hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

The second game was a mirror image of the first, with the script flipped as the Musketeers applied a steady drizzle of offense on their way to a 5-2 win.

The Spartans have allowed only 78 hits and 45 runs this season which are the fewest hits and runs allowed by any Mountain West team in 2023. Opponents are hitting only .222 against SJSU as the Spartans lead the conference in opposing batting average.

Robert Hamchuk was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week after big games in wins over San Diego State and San Francisco and a loss to Central Michigan.

Hamchuk hit .500 over the three games, going 8-for-16 at the plate. The Spartans' left fielder registered three doubles, one home run and drove in five RBIs, and had at least two hits in all three games. Two of his doubles came in a 23-2 win over San Francisco on Tuesday.

ABOUT SANTA CLARA
Santa Clara baseball swept the West Coast Conference's weekly awards this week as Efrain Manzo was named the Player of the Week with Skylar Hales being named the Pitcher of the Week. Both players had huge roles in the Broncos beating No. 2 Stanford and then sweeping Villanova.

Manzo hit .500 (8-for-16) over the four games, including going 7-for-10 against the Wildcats. He finished with four doubles and a home run while knocking in four and scoring four times as well.

Hales pitched at Stanford and again in the series finale against Villanova, picking up the win. He punched out the side against the Cardinal, and then did it in each of his three innings Sunday to give him 12 strikeouts in 4 innings. He also allowed just one hit and one walk.

Santa Clara finished last season 24-29 and 11-16 in the West Coast Conference. As a team, the Broncos hit. .257/.349/.378 with 269 runs scored on 95 doubles, 19 triples, and 28 home runs. The team posted an ERA of 5.66 with 490 strikeouts in 464 innings.
