BASE | Zags Avoid Sweep in Series Finale

SPOKANE, Wash. – Saint Mary's Baseball couldn't pull off a sweep at Gonzaga after a 3-0 loss on Sunday, but still helped solidify their spot in the WCC Tournament standings by winning the series in Spokane.

The Gaels scored 19 runs over the first two games of the series, but couldn't get any runs across in the finale. SMC managed seven hits, one more than they had on Saturday when they scored seven runs, but Gonzaga kept the Gaels from stringing those hits together and it led to Saint Mary's stranding seven runners.

Redshirt freshman Garret Plata pitched well in his third start of the season. The converted reliever went four innings and allowed just one run on three hits, with one walk and two strikeouts on 60 pitches.

The Bulldogs got a run in the bottom of the third on a single to right with a runner at second off Plata, and strung together three hits in the seventh off of three relievers to score two more runs. The Zags twice drove in a run after the Gaels issued an intentional walk of Gonzaga slugger Brian Kalmer.

Saint Mary's would put a runner on in every inning except the third and fourth. The fifth and eighth innings were the lone innings SMC put multiple runners on base.

UP NEXT
Saint Mary's will play their final WCC series of the season and christen the new Brother Ronald Gallagher Stadium this weekend when they host USD from May 12-14. The Gaels will celebrate senior day on Sunday, May 14.
