MSOC | Another Shutout for Gaels as They Blank UC Davis 1-0

DAVIS, Calif. – Saint Mary's came away with a 1-0 over UC Davis on Sunday, behind a strong game from keeper Jack Landreth and the first career goal for Fynn Allmon.

Landreth made his presence felt right away with two big saves in the 10th minute. The first stop was a sprawling save to his right, followed by him smothering second shot from close range.

The junior made a leaping save in 25th minute off a set piece, where Landreth had to jump backwards and punch the ball away from the top left corner of the net. The Washington native collided with post on the save attempt, sacrificing his body to keep the ball out, and was briefly attended to by the trainer before remaining in the game.

Saint Mary's (5-1-2) got on the board when the Gaels defense squashed a possession for UC Davis (2-3-2) and started up the other way from their own end of the pitch. Bastian Toelhoej came up with the initial stop to take the ball away and get it to Louis Sterobo. He fed the ball to Justin Sosa who laced a long pass through to Allmon who was one-on-one with an Aggie defender.

The Davis defender tried to get is leg up to play the ball but missed on the attempt, and Allmon got the keeper to over commit before going right around him to put away a left-footed shot that made it 1-0 SMC in the 33rd minute.

In the second half though, UC Davis made a valiant effort to equalize with some good pressure that required more good defense and big saves from Landreth. The Aggies shot just wide in 61st minute on a dangerous opportunity. The Gaels would threaten on the counter less than a minute later, when Riley Lynch got behind the defense and fed a cross to Tyler Hardin, who would deflect it over the net from the edge of the six-yard area, as the keeper came out to make a save and Hardin flipped over into the goal.

From there the Aggies would control a lot of the possession time in the final 20 minutes. Landreth made another big kick save in the 78th minute after an Aggie got to a header just in front of Landreth, as the Gaels keeper made a stop from close range.

But even with the possession of the Aggies in the second half, Saint Mary's kept them to just five shots after they put up 14 shots in the first.

The shutout was Landreth's third of the season and fourth as a Gael.
