MSOC | Stanford Pulls Away to Beat Gaels
9/22/2023 9:33:00 PM | Men's Soccer
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Saint Mary's Men's Soccer fell 4-0 to No. 8 Stanford on Friday night in the Gaels final tune up before WCC play begins next week.
The first 10-plus minutes belonged to Stanford, with the Cardinal getting off four shots while controlling the ball in the Gaels end of the field. Two shots were blocked by Timothy Stepehens as he slid down to the turf, one narrowly missed wide right after a corner kick, and one required a diving save by Jack Landreth to his right.
In the 14th minute the Cardinal would break through when Zach Bohane settled down a loose ball right at the top of the penalty area, and blasted a left-footed shot into the left side of the net past the leaping attempt from Landreth to make it 1-0 Stanford.
After an initial push from the Gaels following the Cardinal goal, Stanford would come right back to threaten again in the 23rd minute when a shot from the Cardinal deflected of the post just below where it meets the crossbar.
A corner piece in the 44th minute would lead to Stanford's second goal, on a perfectly placed header into the left side of the net by Mark Fisher for a 2-0 Cardinal lead. It would be another corner piece in the 50th minute that put Stanford up 3-0 on a diving header towards the goal by Will Cleary from inside the six-yard area.
They would tack on a fourth goal in the 76th minute off another corner opportunity that was redirected out of midair to make it 4-0.
The Gaels did get three shots on goal in the second half, including a right-footed shot from Riley Lynch that was handled by the keeper in the 48th minute and a blistering shot from Storm Schmidt Hollensted in the 57th minute that required a save to keep it out of the bottom right corner of the net.
Even with the three goals allowed, keeper Jack Landreth still made six spectacular saves to keep the Gaels in the game.
UP NEXT:
The Gaels will begin WCC play at home versus Santa Clara on Saturday, September 30 at 1:00 p.m. in Saint Mary's Stadium.
